Braking issues a major concern of trucking industry safety inspectors. New campaigns are being conducted to help reduce the number of trucking accidents occurring in the United States.

There have been a number of trucking accidents recently across the country that have been caused by fatigued truck drivers. This has led to much attention being focused on the new hours-of-service (HOS) rules, which limit the amount of time a driver may be behind the wheel.

While this has helped eliminate some of the trucking accidents being caused by 18-wheelers, there are still many other issues of concern that need to be addressed. Regulations created by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) have listed very serious penalties for companies who fail to properly maintain their vehicles; however, the agency lacks the resources to perform all of the inspections necessary to find all of the potentially unsafe vehicles on the roads.

Week-Long Focused Efforts

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance has announced its plan to conduct Brake Safety Week, a nationwide initiative that is planning to examine 30,000 trucks to check for any issues that may be present in the vehicles brakes. The CVSA is an international group comprised of law enforcement officers, department of transportation officials, as well as other individuals focused on improving truck safety. The organization has several campaigns each year where it performs inspections on commercial vehicles to ensure that trucks on the roads meet safety specifications.

The CVSA is focused on brakes, as brake issues accounted for nearly 50 percent of all out-of-service violations issued during Roadcheck 2013, a campaign conducted in part by the CVSA and FMCSA. The inspectors will be looking for missing or defective brake parts, along with braking systems that have not been properly adjusted. Warning lights, that indicate when there are problems with the systems in place, will also be examined to determine if they are in working order. Those trucks that demonstrate severe safety issues will be ordered out of service until the defects are corrected.
